    NAME 15% Cabinets

    DESIGN AREAS Product Design

DESCRIPTION In this cabinet system (credenza, wardrobe, drawer, and nightstand), Rodolfo Agrella examines the visible empty place left by the Venezuelan diaspora in his country, where the political and socio-economic reality has forced the worldwide exodus of skilled citizens looking for a better, stable, secure place to grow, and leaving everything behind.

By 2017, when this collection was first designed, 15% of the Venezuelan population had migrated. That meant 15% of the country's social fabric and the constant reminder that something was and is still missing (by 2022, that number increased to 24%, representing more than 6 million people).

This collection presents a visual interpretation of that exodus, removing or enhancing 15% of each piece's surface and constructive material via acid showers that fade down the physical qualities of each element without compromising the furniture function to create indents and make grip elements for pulling drawers and doors.

The 15% Collection was introduced as part of the Salone Satellite Exhibition "Africa and Latin America Rising Design" during Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2018. It marked the beginning of a more extensive furniture system.

Based on the same logic of removing and enhancing the 15%—24% of the pieces' surface, a new collection of glass lighting fixtures, rugs, mirrors, and a marble table system is being developed.

    TECHNICAL FEATURES

Measurements: Credenza / Wardrobe / Drawer / Nightstand

Materials: Solid wood wrapped in acid-washed high-rub Poly Cotton fabric with Jungle Red powder-coated metal legs.

Techniques: The pieces’ indents were created with subtraction of 15% of the material to make grip elements for pulling drawers and doors. The remaining 85% of the cabinet’s fabric surface has been washed out using a desaturation process with acid.
